Hello and welcome to our class writing
blog. As you are all aware, I absolutely love to teach writing. Our first
assignments will center around personal narrative writing, otherwise known as
memoir and of course, the art of telling a good story!
In your first posting, I'd like you to tell me a little bit about yourself. Share what your goals are for this class. Tell me what you love (or don't love) about writing.
Have fun with it! Feel free to comment on each other's postings, after all this is our community.

Ms. Zuba
For this class, my goal is to become better at capturing reader attention. This will be a useful skill in both creative and technical writing.
ReplyDeleteWhat I love about writing is the ability to present information in a medium without dependence on time. When speaking, anything can disrupt the flow of words, and you'll break immersion in a story going back, as an example. With a written document, the reader can control the pace to suit themselves, and backtrack if they forget anything. If so inclined, the reader could even skip a part they didn't want to read (the hope is to not create those parts in the first place).
This year, I was elected in to NEHS and I am currently the only senior in it. English and writing have always been my strong suit in school as oppose to the dreaded math and science. I really like writing so I think my goal for this class is to be more comfortable with my writing and not to second guess myself which I often do. Sometimes when given a writing assignment where you can write about whatever you please it can be more difficult than when you are given an actual prompt. That is how it is for me anyways, and I want to get more comfortable with free writing. I think that with the amount that we write in this class it will definitely help me to do so and I look forward to that.
ReplyDeleteI am in tenth grade and enjoy playing sports. I love to play soccer and swim. My goals for this class is to improve my writing with fun, interesting prompts. I love to write fictional writing and am excited for the long fiction unit. I'm not very interested in the poetry unit.
ReplyDeleteThis class is my second writing elective this term as I took writing workshop with Ms. Betar the first semester! My goal that I hope to achieve is to become a better writer by the end of this class. I would also like to make my writing more creative. I love writing a story or something personal. Writing an essay about a book where you have to answer the prompt and have evidence is not my kind of writing. I also do not like to be rushed when I am writing and really prefer to take my time at my house.
ReplyDeleteHello! I am Nicole Winkler, I am part of a family of five with two older sisters. Kelsey and Jenna are there names and they are 23 and 22 years old, Kelsey is a civil engineer and Jenna is a food services manager at Mass General. In my free time, I love to play volleyball. I have been playing since 8th grade and am still deciding if I want to play in college or not.
ReplyDeleteAs a writer, I like to not be told what to write about. I tend to do poorly on specific prompts. I am curious to see how this class goes in terms of grades because I want to see improvement because of the more dynamic take this class takes on writing. Specifically, I would like to sharpen the purpose of my writing piece; sometimes it can get blurred with all the details I put in.
For this class, some of my goals are to become a stronger narrative writer, and to become more comfortable with public speaking. As far as writing, I recently took the reading and writing memoirs class, where I felt that I improved my narrative writing. I hope that this class will be able to help me develop my storytelling even more. I also look forward to writing more than just personal narratives, but other stories and poetry as well. I also hope that I will become more comfortable with public speaking as I share stories in this class. I have already taken the public speaking course, and I feel like this class will be very helpful in making me even more comfortable with sharing my work. For writing, one of my favorite things about it is being able to create a story about myself or parts of my life, and making it sound much better in a story than I ever could just reciting it to people. Through this class, I hope to be able to improve my storytelling, and even become more comfortable with sharing my work.
ReplyDeleteI have an older brother and sister and we moved here about two years ago from Georgia. I cheered throughout high school. My goal for this class is to become a better writer. I dont like to read my writing to a large group.
ReplyDeleteI have an older sister who's a sophomore in college, and a golden retriever who's about 11 years old. I'm going to Umass Amherst, where I'll be majoring in music. Most of the money I get is spent on books. In this class, I'm excited to get back into writing. I love being able to build a world where anything can happen, and hopefully, I'll become more comfortable with sharing my work.
ReplyDeleteI have been working in Film for the past few years and I plan to continue with it into college and make it my career. At first I didn't know where I would fit in when it came to jobs in the film industry, but I found my place for awhile directing. When I began to start creating my own work instead of just directing sets, I fell in love with the pre-production writing process. I still have an end goal of being a director, but writing for the screen is the profession I'm shooting for in between then and now. I'm hoping that this class will help foster my writing abilities so I can more clearly present my creative talents. I also hope to make myself more comfortable with presenting my work to others.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Dylan Shea. I love music and sports. I also love Tom Brady. I have an older brother, Ryan, who works at Hubspot, which is an inbound marketing and sales platform and an older sister, Amanda, who studies communication at Syracuse. My goals for this class is to be more comfortable in my own skin about telling and writing stories. I also want to be able to put my self in other people's shoes when writing about them. I love writing because of the rush you get out of it once you just finished something great. What I hate about writing is reading it to others, but I'm going to try to work on it.
ReplyDeleteI am very creative and artistic. I care a lot about the environment and spreading positivity and knowledge. Next fall I’ll be going to school to double major in art and environmental sustainability. I’m excited for this class because I enjoy writing and I’m a very naturally creative person. I love writing because you get this stream of consciousness and uncover information and answers that you wouldn’t be able to come across by just thinking about it. It’s nice to go back and read old pieces that you’ve written and see how you’ve changed or maybe how you’re very much still the same.
ReplyDeleteI have an older sister named Elyssa and a dog named Teddy. I work at Sky Zone Westborough which I hate like 85% of the time but the other 15% is okay. I am going into UMass Amherst in the natural sciences exploratory track. I love nature and the environment. In this class, I am hoping to become a better writer and to get more comfortable with my writing. I love expressing myself through writing, but sometimes I don't like writing if I am writing something I don't feel confident about.
ReplyDeleteOh hey Matt, dude suhhhh! I have an older brother who lives in Brighton, MA and is 26 years old. Next year I hope to go to college majoring in computer science. One of the goals I have for this class is to become a better writer and orator. I say lots of filler words, and I want to fix that, along with writing in a more engaging way. I like writing because I enjoy telling stories and it's a great method of doing so.
ReplyDeleteI'm Ruth and I have blue hair and a pet snake. I work at Lowe's Variety in Northborough, not Lowe's the Hardware store. One of my goals for this class is to write more. I enjoy creative writing such as poetry and stories, but don't always have the time; I'm hoping this class can be a good starting point for more writing. I also would like to try to work on my ability to write short pieces. I usually write longer pieces and while that can be useful at times, there are other moments when concise writing is important.
ReplyDeleteWhile I can't say I plan on being a writer, I enjoy writing and story telling. My goals for this class are to improve my storytelling abilities, especially verbal storytelling, and learn how to improve my creative writing. Being a senior, I plan on studying psychology and film in college next year. Outside of school, I was a gymnast for almost fourteen years and now pole vault.
ReplyDeleteI am a senior. I have played guitar for 10 years and am not very good at writing. My goals for this class are to become a better writer, learn to write with fluidity, and be able to better structure my writing. What I love about writing is that it allows you to express your thoughts. What I do not like about writing is the actual writing, sharing my work in a large group, and writing non-fiction.
ReplyDeleteOh hey Neil, suuuuuh dude? I have two older sisters, one is 24 and the other is 21. They both graduated from Algonquin, the older one, Alex, went to William and Mary and the younger one, Danni, is currently enrolled at Ithaca. I plan on going to college next year to major in some form of business, but that doesn’t mean I’m a cold, heartless sob. I care about a lot of things; family, friends, dog, even the environment (as I’m sitting here drinking from a styrofoam cup). I really enjoy creative writing because I’d say I’m a pretty creative, outgoing person and I’m really not afraid to share my work, unless it’s poetry. That’s one thing I hope to improve this year, my overall understanding and appreciation of poetry.
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm Isabel, I'm the youngest in my family & my two older siblings live in California. I've been doing gymnastics for 14 years and am committed to a Division 1 Collegiate Program. I really like animals & warm weather.
ReplyDeleteMy goals for this class are to become a better creative writer. As a high school student, the majority of my writing is expected to be thesis driven, heavily structured, and analytical. However, in this class I hope to write without having to follow a systematic structure of writing. I don't like reading long things out loud because I sound illiterate.
Hi, I'm Nick and I have 2 younger sisters that are twins. I was born in New Hampshire and moved to Florida when I was 11. My family still lives in Florida but I am living with a host family in Northborough to play hockey up here. My goal for this class is to become a better writer overall and unlock my creativity. I like writing when I have something to write about but I hate writing formal essays. I am looking forward to this class and to expanding my writing ability.
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm Kylie Middleton. I have a sister, Sarah, who's currently a freshman. If I'm not at school, I'm usually at dance. I have been dancing since I was 5 and I hope to join the dance team in college! I plan on going to school for early childhood education. After college, I want to travel the world. Greece and bora bora are two places I want to go.
ReplyDeleteAs far as writing goes, I've always had a passion for it. I'm excited to be able to use my creativity for writing in this class. Something I'm not as strong with is sharing my personal pieces to an audience. I hope I can overcome that this semester.
I’m Isabelle I love cats and hate my job at Papa Gino’s. I have two older siblings and live with my grandma, all of whom like to make appearances in my writing.
ReplyDeleteI love writing because it’s so fluid, I like the idea that everyday when you sit down to write it will always be a different experience (compared to doing a math problem where you always find yourself looking for one singular right answer. Another fun fact about me: I hate math). I also just love a well crafted sentence, paragraph, or story. There is something infinitely satisfying about reading something that flows from word to word and sentence to sentence effortlessly, which is something I am most definitely not achieving at the current moment. That’s the thing about writing, I feel like it frequently leaves me in a state of limbo. I have ideas but fail to execute them well, or the syntax and word choice flow together like I'm the next Hemingway and yet the ideas are about as original or inspiring as a piece of white bread. It always leaves me with something to be desired; I don’t think I have ever been entirely happy with one of my pieces. Although, this might just be the nature of doing any task that doesn’t have a finality to it that extends beyond an arbitrary deadline. Have I mentioned creativity? Yeah, creativity in writing is also something that alludes me. Ironic that I would volunteer myself to take a class called creative writing, but a wise man once said “don't limit your challenges, challenge your limits”, and by a ‘wise man’ I mean a post my racist aunt shared on Facebook. I hope that this class will push my creativity, and that my peers works will inspire not discourage me to improve my own.
Hi I'm Ellie, I have a sister Macey and two dogs Dixie and Jade. I love country music, the beach and animals. I hope to go to college to become an elementary schools teacher. I am looking forward to this class because I enjoy creative writing but I haven't had many opportunities in school to improve my creative writing skills. Through out my High school career I have learned skills and techniques for analytical writing, rather than creative writing. I Also hope to improve my grammar and organization, since those are things i struggle with.
ReplyDeleteHey, as you can see my name is Andres. Mispronunciations are rampant on this name of Hispanic origin. I truly enjoy playing lacrosse with my friends. I can be competitive, and definitely boisterous. My goal for this class is to bring out my inner descriptive and imaginative writer. I love how I can express my thought through writing, but I dislike how I cannut spel veryy wel.
ReplyDeleteHi I'm Rebecca (obviously). I have two siblings, two cats, and a dog. I'm looking forward to being able to write without having to use citations. I'm also looking forward to writing my own stories instead of analyzing someone else's. I'm sick of five paragraph essays.
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm Jamie. I have a sister named Annalise and a brother named Mike. I love music, and I play percussion along with several other instruments. I'm also into filmmaking and drama. What I like about writing is writing fiction stories. I'm decent at writing essays but I don't particularly enjoy it, and I've always been terrible at writing stories about myself.
ReplyDeleteHi I'm Nicki, my absolute favorite things would have to be my sister Olivia, art, and of course birds. I'm extremely excited to go to college at MassArt next year, even though I hate cities and the cold (Boston is definitely both). I really like fictional stories, especially ones that involve the supernatural. I've never been great at writing stories, but I would absolutely love to write something exceptionally decent after taking this class.
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful and it's lovely to have you all in my class!

ReplyDeleteHi I'm Caroline, I am very excited to start this class and grow as a writing as well improve my creative writing skills. I have a younger sister, Marybeth, who is a freshmen this year at Algonquin. I finished my last season of volleyball here this fall. I love spending time with my friends and going to the beach.
ReplyDeleteHey! Long time no see. It's been a long time coming, but i'm excited to have another class with you! I'm not the best writer mainly because I hate writing within guidelines and things I don't enjoy, but creative writing seems to be right up my alley. Anyways, I am approaching my last baseball season this spring and am super excited!
ReplyDeleteHey Ms. Zuba, I've never had a class with you but I am excited to take this course and better my abilities as a writer. My main interests are participating in sports with friends and having fun. I play lacrosse, football and church basketball, it is all very fun. Looking forward to an exciting end to my high school career in your class!
ReplyDeleteHi Im Talia! I am very excited to take this class and improve my writing skills. I moved from England almost five years ago and my interests are hanging with my friends, going to the beach and shopping. I really enjoy writing about personal stories because they are fun and easy tel tell. Cant wait for the semester!
ReplyDeleteHi Ms.Zuba, this is a little late but im looking forward to having this class! I like to hangout with my friends and go to sporting events. I have an older sister Lexi and younger brother Jagger. My writing skills are not the best so I am looking forward to improving upon that this semester!!
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm Alyssa, and I'm a senior here at Algonquin. I am very excited to take this class this semester and to challenge myself with writing creative pieces. I am not always the strongest writer, but I think this class will help with that and I will be able to improve for both college next year and for the future.
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm Luke. I love playing in sports especially soccer. I am incredibly competitive and love to win. I hope that my writing can get better this year and my goal is that by the end of the year to be able to write a three page piece of writing without repeating myself several times (which I do often). I can't wait to get started!
ReplyDeleteHi Mrs. Zuba, i'm Kaleigh. I have an older brother named Matt who is a sophomore at Lehigh and I have a puppy named Tucker that we rescued a year ago. I have always struggled to get my thoughts onto paper so I am excited that this class will help me with that. I'm hoping that it will allow my creative side to come out.
ReplyDeleteAs a reminder.....I do not check or count late blogs....
